"In 1971 the New Leipzig JC's and Commercial Club undertook the joint project of sponsoring the first Oktoberfest. Representatives of Church and Civic organizations met with the Oktoberfest Committee - explanations of the fistival and suggested guidelines were presented. It was the desire of the sponsoring organizations to make this:
A Festival of thanks to God at the end of harvest;
A celebration in honor of our German heritage;
A time when old friends can be reunited.
The fears were great in our first year! How much food, what types of booths and where to put them, what type of entertainment (that would please all ages), how to provide security to prevent a "Zap In", and of course, many, many, more!! Weekly meetings were held to iron out the problems and as usual our people came through. The responsibilities have been shouldered by town and country residents alike. Our Oktoberfest has not only met the original goals, but it has strengthened the bond of fellowship for all of us in the New Leipzig area.
There is much work to be done each year preceding our festival, but we know working together much can be accomplished. With all the planning and preparing we are often fatiqued when Oktoberfest begins, but we are rejuvenated when we observe the joys of visitors reunited with former classmates, playmates, and neighbors. As we look back on the 47 years of Oktoberfest, we have no regrets, only fond memories.
We rejoice in your presence and in the true spirit of Oktoberfest, we bid you...WILLKOMMEN!"
